The Bureau of American Ethnology was established in 1879 by an act of Congress for the purpose of transferring archives, records and materials relating to the Native American tribes from the Interior Department to the Smithsonian Institution. Frederick Webb Hodge was an ethnographer, archaeologist, editor and museum director. Hodge's first exposure to archaeology was as secretary of the Hemenway Southwestern Archaeological Expedition. When the project was over he returned to work at the Bureau of American Ethnology as Librarian.
